Jim Calhoun Interview
Hall of fame coach Jim Calhoun sits down to give you insight on his life and career.
A towering Sue Bird billboard greets visitors to Seattle's Nike Town. The 30-foot high banner dominates the entrance to the footwear and clothing outlet, just like the basketball star stands over her opponents on the court.
Few female athletes are better at their sport or more popular than Bird, one of the most decorated women's basketball players in history.
As a two-time All-American at UConn, the point guard won two National Championships and appeared in three Final Fours while the Huskies posted an eye-popping 136-9 record (93.8 winning percentage). As a senior in 2001-02, Bird won almost every meaningful player of the year award, including the Naismith Award and honors from the Associated Press and U.S. Basketball Writers Association.
The first-overall pick by the WNBA's Seattle Storm in 2002, Bird's been just as dynamic as a professional, earning first-team All-WNBA selections three times (2002, 2003, 2005) and three all-star selections (2002, 2003, 2005). She led the Storm to its first playoff birth as a rookie. Bird also won a gold medal as member of 2004 U.S. Olympic Team in Athens.
When Gary Payton left for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2003, Seattle fans voted for Bird's image to replace the departed Sonics guard at the Nike Town entrance.
